Pacific Gas & Electric Self-Reports Emails to Regulators
From the Wall Street Journal of Mon, 22 Dec 2014 18:07:46 EST

PG&E Corp. ’s Pacific Gas & Electric Co. unit said Monday it has self-reported more emails that may have violated rules concerning how businesses communicate with the California Public Utilities Commission.

In September, the utility said it found that some emails may have violated CPUC rules, and said three executives were fired as a result of an internal review. In October, it self-reported additional emails that it believed violated rules, and said the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco was investigating the company’s communications with the CPUC.

The company reviewed the emails after officials in San Bruno, Calif., accused it of having an inappropriately close relationship with regulators. San Bruno was the site of a gas pipeline explosion in September 2010 that killed eight people.

Pacific Gas & Electric said it is affirming “its commitment to transparency and accountability” and said it is encouraging the CPUC “to adopt new standards and processes that will allow the public to have easy, open access—preferably electronically—to communications the Commission has with all parties interacting with it.”

The utility plans to provide copies of about 65,000 emails to the CPUC by mid-February. It is reviewing the messages for sensitive material such as contract data and customer information.
