ZURICH—More than 7,500 people have died from Ebola in the three West African countries most affected by the current outbreak, according to new data from the World Health Organization.

In an update Monday, the United Nations health agency said 19,340 confirmed, suspected or probable cases of Ebola had been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The three countries are at the epicenter of the current outbreak.

A total of 7,518 people have died of Ebola in the three countries since the outbreak began, the WHO said.

The new data come after U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon returned from a visit to the disease-struck region. In a statement distributed by the U.N., Mr. Ban said progress was being made in the fight against Ebola, citing a slower transmission rate in some places and the effectiveness of isolating patients, tracking people those patients have had contact with and conducting safe burials of victims.

However, he acknowledged that “Ebola remains an emergency and there can be no letup in our efforts.”

Ebola spreads through bodily fluids, and corpses can be extremely contagious. The disease causes high fever and internal bleeding.
