Honda in China Sets Recall Over Air Bags
From the Wall Street Journal of Tue, 16 Dec 2014 11:07:00 EST

SHANGHAI— Honda Motor Co. will recall nearly 570,000 vehicles in China over air bag safety concerns, as the Japanese auto maker continues to grapple with regulatory concerns over air bags supplied by Japan’s Takata Corp.

The auto maker’s joint ventures with local Chinese partners will recall a total of 569,769 vehicles on safety concerns over air bags, China’s quality watchdog said on Tuesday. The agency didn’t specify the supplier of the air bags, but a spokeswoman for Honda in China said the issue was related to Takata air bags and described the recall as part of Honda’s ongoing global recall related to air bags.

Problems with inflaters could create flying debris on deployment, thus posing a threat to passenger safety, the statement from the watchdog said.

Takata didn’t respond immediately to request for comments.

Some 20 million vehicles have been, or will be, recalled world-wide by more than 10 auto makers since 2008 over Takata-made air bag inflaters that can rupture and shoot out shards at occupants, an issue linked to at least five deaths.

In statements posted on its website, China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said Honda’s joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. would recall 527,136 Accord models produced between May 2002 and December 2007.

GAC-Honda will also recall 16,505 Fit Saloon cars made between October 2002 and December 2003.

Honda will also recall 26,128 Elysion MPVs manufactured by its joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group Co. between June 2012 and June 2014.
